Kayaköy Fethiye ’nin mutlaka görülmesi gereken yerlerinden birisidir. Çok eski tarihlere dayanan antik kent hala ayaktadır.
Kentin tarihi geçmişinin M.Ö 3 binlere kadar gitmesine rağmen günümüze ulaşan az sayıdaki Bazı lahit ve kaya mezarları M.Ö. 4.yy.'a tarihlenmektedir.
Yamaca dayalı mevcut yapı guruplarının tamamı 19.yy.'ın 2.yarısı ile 20.yy.'ın ilk çeyreğinde yapılmıştır. Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin kuruluş yıllarında bölgede yaşayan Rumların Batı Trakyadaki Türkler ile mübadele edilmesi sonucu evler boşaltılmış, yapıların ahşap unsurları doğal etkenler sonucu tahrip olarak kent bugünkü görünümünü almıştır.
Kentte her biri 50 m2 ölçülerinde birbirlerini manzara ve ışık açısından engellemeyen 350-400 civarında ev ile yapılar arasına serpiştirilmiş çok sayıda şapel, 2 büyük kilise, 1 okul ve 1 gümrük binası bulunmaktadır.

Fethiye şehir merkezinden düzenli olarak kalkan Ölüdeniz dolmuşları tercih edilebilir.

There Were bout 350-400 holies, in the city, 50 square meters each, built in such a way as to allow for the panorama and/avoid over-shadowing one another. There TJ were* numerous chapels scattered among the houses, 2 large churhes, one school and a customs house.
